About Medical Marijuana in Maine

Maine has very liberal cannabis laws compared to other states. The state legalized medical marijuana in November of 1999 when the voters approved Question 2 by 62%. Recreational marijuana was legalized in 2016, although it took several years to start actual sales.

Recreational cannabis sales finally became available on October 9, 2020. It's still worth it to have a medical marijuana certification in the state, though. Maine's medical marijuana patients have access to more dispensaries, lower taxes and expanded cultivation rights.

The state eliminated the need for qualifying conditions in 2018. Marijuana can now be recommended in Maine for any condition that the doctor thinks may benefit from cannabis.

More About Maine

Located at the northern tip of the East Coat, Maine is bordered by New Hampshire and the Canadian territories of New Brunswick and Quebec. The state is famous for delicious, fresh seafood and breathtaking views of the northern Atlantic coastline.

While they don't have their own NFL football team, Maine is famed for their ice hockey team, the Mariners. But NHL games at Cross Insurance Arena are just one of the many major tourist attractions in the state. From the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick to the tiny coastal town of Kennebunkport, there's always something fun to see. Bar Harbor offers whale watching tours, and Eastport's deep sea fishing attracts sportsmen and amateurs alike. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens at Boothbay Harbor are a must-see.

Known for their liberal attitude toward cannabis, they were one of the first states to adopt medical cannabis. Over the past two decades, the medical marijuana program has been revised and expanded to become one of the most progressive in the nation. While the adult use market is steadily expanding, 90% of Maine's cities and towns don't allow recreational sales, so it still pays to have that medical marijuana certification!

I'm visiting Maine from another state. Can I use my own state's medical marijuana card?

Yes! Maine offers reciprocity to most states' medical marijuana programs. You can find the list of states that qualify for medical marijuana reciprocity with Maine here: https://www.maine.gov/dafs/omp/medical-use/certification-process/visiting-patients

What documents do I need for my Maine medical marijuana evaluation?

Please have your state-issued ID and your medical records, if you have any, ready when you create your NuggMD account.

Is driving under the influence of marijuana allowed in Maine?

No. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in all 50 states. Please refrain from operating a vehicle or any heavy machinery while consuming cannabis.

Can I renew my current certification before my old one expires?

Yes, and you should since it takes a while to get your new certification to you in the mail. You should renew your certification about 30 days before the old one expires to be safe.

How much cannabis can patients and residents possess in Maine?

Patients and recreational consumers can purchase 2.5 ounces of cannabis at a time. No more than 5 grams of your purchase can be concentrate or extract.

Can my employer fire me for using medical marijuana in Maine?

Maine has instituted workplace protections for medical marijuana patients. Employers can't fire workers just for becoming medical marijuana patients. That said, they're still allowed to prohibit use on-site and during working hours, and some employers are still subject to federal drug-free workplace laws, which will trump the state's legal protections for patients. Check with your employer for more information about their cannabis policies.
